Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Archer Works Episode 11

pathetic mortal you have trifled with things you do not understandPart of the problem with having Rin spend so much time teasing ENFP is that it drains so much intensity from the episode. Now that Caster knows who they are, don’t you think she’s gonna find out where they live? She could attack at any moment with an army of skeleton dudes. I just imagine that if I were in Rin’s position, the most I would do would be to tell ENFP that I’d be interested in doing stuff with him after the holy grail war. She’s a bit busy with a life-or-death struggle right now.

Yes, Rin did say she was a hedonist and that she was only participating in the holy grail war because she enjoyed it. I can understand that mentality, but wouldn’t she have to take the holy grail war seriously to enjoy it? Again, Caster could show up at any minute and kill them both. We should be seeing a bit more urgency here.you have disappointed me mortal your soul will be devoured shortlyThough admittedly, I did like the nature of the teasing. Normally, romances in anime revolve around the bland lead being painful unaware of the female character’s affection for him. From Rin’s teasing, I got the impression that she realized ENFP’s into her and that she was trying to get him to admit it. Gender reversal aside, the fact that one of the involved people knows what’s going on is such a breath of fresh air.

That’s not to say there were zero tired haremish tropes in this episode; ENFP got embarrassed that EHRMAGERD THERE’S A GIRL IN HIS HOUSE and was shocked to see Rin in a short skirt and then Rin and Fuji had to fight but then Fuji rolled over and let Rin stay in the house and it was all very cliched and routine.the first sign of a gary stuI did like all the discussions about ideologies that occurred between ENFP/Rin and ENFP/Archer. It was probably the strongest character development we got in the entire episode. Admittedly, we didn’t need confirmation that ENFP was the selfless martyr type, but what Rin and Archer had to say about that was interesting. Rin hates to see self-sacrifice, which is an easy to understand notion. After all, ENFP’s only going to cause pain to people close to him by hurting himself. Archer objection lies in the fact that he’s a good Nietzschean who can’t respect any value that doesn’t hold up under eternal recurrence. Could you imagine Shirou keeping up this lifestyle if he had to do it forever? No, you couldn’t.

That’s enough praise for one post. I’m going to complain about something now. What was the point of Shirou losing use of his left side in this episode? A considerable amount of screen time was spent on it, and unless future episodes build on this, it didn’t accomplish much. Yes, Shirou’s going to be a better mage now, but this explanation wasn’t necessary. He just used a new kind of magic in the previous episode. Maybe he could realize this magic was his true calling, and that’s why he’s going to be a more badass mage now. The great part about this explanation is that it wouldn’t have required any screen time in this episode.

  1. Shirou’s loss of functionality demonstrates why his ideal is so self-destructive: when wounded, he continued to push on like nothing was wrong, maintained his chores and duties, and never asked for help, even when he was far from capable of going on. The circumstances of the episode make the same point that Archer did in words.

    1. It’s not like that’s the most efficient way to do that. If I remember correctly, the Studio Deen version made a big deal out of how Shirou would do stupid stuff like get hit by Berserker’s club for Saber, and that got the point across plenty well without interrupting the flow of the story. Even if Shirou ruining dishes was the only way to establish his addiction to self-sacrifice, it didn’t have to be a magical illness. Explaining the mechanics of what was wrong with him wasted time, plain and simple.
